helping you help the planet

From mortgage discounts for going green to support creating an eco-friendly home, we could help you do your bit to tackle climate change.

Addressing the climate crisis would appear to begin at home. Residential property represents 16% of the UK’s total carbon emissions, according to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (as at February 2022). So getting your house in order could be one of the best ways to contribute to a more sustainable future.

And we’re here to help. Whether you’re buying an eco-friendly property or making your current home more sustainable, we could give you helpful tips and financial support.

Here at Coutts, we take climate change extremely seriously, so we’re committed to supporting our clients’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprints. Our ambition is that 50% of our mortgage book is secured against homes with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rated C or above by the end of 2030.

You could get up to £2,000 off your mortgage fee

Green mortgages are our way of rewarding clients who either buy a green building or renovate an existing one to reduce their carbon footprint.

We measure and track the carbon impact of homes through their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) – the standard government measure of a property’s energy efficiency which provides a grade from A to G.

We currently offer two Green mortgage products:

GREEN MORTGAGE

  • Our Coutts Green Mortgage could reward you for buying an energy-efficient property.
  • It involves a potential discount of up to £2,000 if you’re intending to buy an energy-efficient home with an EPC rating of grade A or B. The amount you get back depends on how much you borrow.

retrofit GREEN MORTGAGE

  • Our Retrofit Green Mortgage could reward you for renovating an existing property to make it more energy efficient.
  • It involves a potential discount of up to £2,000 on your original mortgage arrangement fee once the improvements to your home are made, and its EPC grade has gone up to a C or above. You have 12 months from taking the mortgage to achieve the rating, and the amount you get back depends on how much you borrow.

When issuing green mortgages, we adopt the Green Home Retrofit Finance Principles, which ensure loans are given only to energy-efficiency work that meets industry-accepted standards in the UK.

Speak to your private banker to find out more.

Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Over-18s only. Terms and conditions apply.

You may not be eligible for all Coutts mortgage solutions. Security may be required. Product fees may apply. Subject to status.

Many people are choosing to retrofit their homes to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions. This can involve things like improving the insulation in your property or switching to renewable energy sources. It can bring you a number of benefits alongside reducing your carbon footprint, such as lowering your household bills and making your home more comfortable.

You can learn more about it at the government sponsored website simpleenergyadvice.org.uk, which covers a few simple steps you could take and lets you see your home’s EPC rating based on previous surveys.

Here at Coutts, we’re currently trialling a new Greener Home Service, working with global sustainability consultancy Anthesis. It provides expert, impartial advice from retrofit assessors, and support to those looking to make their homes more eco-friendly. It’s not yet widely available to clients, but if you’d like to get involved in the pilot, speak to your private banker. We’ll update this page as we develop the service.
