In 2021 Coutts collaborated with growth capital investor BGF (formerly the Business Growth Fund) to launch the UK Enterprise Fund (UKEF), which supports small and medium business entrepreneurs across the UK.

Both Coutts and BGF recognise how access to funding is key to the success of a business and, in turn, critical for achieving greater financial and social equality. Coutts also recognises that not enough is being done by financial institutions in this space, with a lot more work required to direct funding towards underrepresented entrepreneurs.

UKEF aims to support UK small and medium enterprises, and the entrepreneurs behind them, with long-term flexible growth capital.

As part of this, it also seeks to identify and address equity gaps across the whole entrepreneurial ecosystem. This includes raising awareness of funding options, support for women-led businesses, regional funding disparities and initiatives aimed at increasing the diversity of management teams.

We recently spoke with BGF Executive Chairman Stephen Welton, who emphasised the power such investments can have, particularly at this difficult time for markets. He said: “That means continuing to look for good investment opportunities throughout the economic cycle – meeting interesting companies with dynamic entrepreneurs at their helms. As we’re investing for long-term growth – six or seven years – we must always consider: what opportunity is it that our investment is going to unlock, and why is that attractive?”
