Sharp looks – tailoring trends for spring/summer 2018

As London fashion week begins, the luxury-shopping destination MATCHESFASHION.COM explores SS18’s fresh take on tailoring.

3 min read

During World War I, tailoring was first adopted by women for entirely practical reasons. Then, designers such as Coco Chanel began to create suiting specifically for women. Now, tailoring in its different forms has become the backbone of the modern woman’s wardrobe.

For SS18 it continues to reign, with designers introducing new cuts, interesting textures and softer hues to their suiting. From trouser suits to evening looks, this is how to work tailoring into your look for the new season.

The trouser suit

The trouser suit walked triumphantly onto the runways this season, thanks in part to the Hillary effect – the presidential candidate’s smart suits became her signature look during the 2016 US election. Designers gave new life to the workplace mainstay – the staple had a modern revamp with relaxed cuts, oversized shapes and neutral tones at labels like Stella McCartney, Lemaire and Joseph.

These pieces are the definition of minimal luxury: to the untrained eye, they appear simple but on closer inspection their elevated fabrics, complex construction and directional details prove they are anything but. For example, if your office allows for a creative dress code, look to Chloe’s velvet brown suit which is decorated with a whimsical horse-print.

“A smart blazer is an easy way to add polish to your workwear look. This season, the wardrobe favourite comes in a longline silhouette.”

Modern outerwear

A smart blazer is an easy way to add polish to your workwear look. This season, the wardrobe favourite comes in a longline silhouette – see Jil Sander and new label-to-know Summa. Continuing from last season, blazers in heritage prints like plaids and checks are still in vogue, as seen at Gucci, Tibi and Alexander McQueen.

The trench is also a key tailoring piece for SS18. Earning its place as a go-to for women in transitional months, this season designers took the staple in an exciting new direction. At Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli adorned his version with oversized utility pockets on the shoulder, while at Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia reworked his option with denim. In Milan, MaxMara’s elegant offering was crafted in a sheer linen.

Evening tailoring

Since 1966, when Yves Saint Laurent caused a stir with his iconic ‘Le Smoking’ collection, tailoring has been considered as a desirable style for the evening – and for SS18 there are myriad suiting options for after dark. Haider Ackermann’s tailoring makes a particularly elegant proposition for the evening – think slick blazers with seductive cut-outs fashioned in metallic and ruby-red silks.

Up-and-coming London designer Halpern’s signature high-octane embellishments adorn his statement tailoring, with a leopard-print co-ord standing out as a highlight. Suiting is also a modern alternative to a gown for any event, from weddings to black-tie balls. This season, take your cue from looks at labels like Gabriela Hearst and Dolce & Gabbana and dress in head-to-toe tailored pastels – a fresh choice for all spring events.

If a matching suit doesn’t appeal to you, there is a more relaxed way to tap into the trend. Try laidback co-ord separates in luxe silks while sticking to a pastel palette – turn to Parisian label Sies Marjan for a look that is on point for work or weekend.
