Spotlight on the Tailored Portfolio Service
Senior Portfolio Manager Simon Pinckney introduces the Coutts Tailored Portfolio Service

In this video, Senior Portfolio Manager Simon Pinckney introduces the Coutts Tailored Portfolio Service (TPS), and explains how it can suit a diverse range of client needs. Though built upon the same investment principles as our unitised solutions such as the Coutts Multi Asset Funds (CMAF), TPS offers a more route to access the Coutts house view and our wealth of investment expertise.
The value of investments, and the income from them, can go down as well as up, and you may not recover the amount of your original investment. Where an investment involves exposure to a foreign currency, changes in rates of exchange may cause the value of the investment, and the income from it, to go up or down. Investments in emerging markets are subject to certain special risks, which include, for example, a certain degree of political instability, relatively unpredictable financial market trends and economic growth patterns, a financial market that is still in the development stage and a weak economy.
A key benefit of the Tailored Portfolio Service is that portfolios are built upon a segregated rather than pooled mandate. Unlike our unitised investments, they are held in the client’s own name. This means we can offer a far greater degree of flexibility to express individual preferences. Working alongside a Wealth Manager, a dedicated Portfolio Manager will devise a solution that reflects and evolves in relation to current circumstances and longer-term investment ambitions.
A FLEXIBLE APPROACH
A frequent request of some TPS clients, for example, is to avoid so-called ‘sin stocks’ such as gambling companies or arms manufacturers. More than this, however, by holding the individual assets directly within the portfolio we have the flexibility to be smart about how and where we hold them.
If the client holds an Individual Savings Account (ISA) with us, for example, the Portfolio Manager could place income-yielding assets in the ISAs and the high growth assets in the unwrapped part of the portfolio. This could reduce the income tax payable on the income from investments while maintaining the desired risk profile. Similarly, while CMAF funds pay an income twice a year, a TPS portfolio can make distributions on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.
WE OFFER THREE TYPES OF TAILORED PORTFOLIO SERVICE.
- Discretionary - all investment decisions are made by the Portfolio Manager in line with a defined mandate
- Advisory - each decision is agreed with the client before being actioned
- Bespoke - portfolio is constructed from the ground up to meet your requirements
Whatever solution chosen, a Portfolio Manager will always be on hand to talk to about issues such as trading activity, market movements, or our view of significant events such as Britain’s exit from the European Union. It’s entirely at the client’s discretion to choose the level and frequency of support that they feel most suitable.
Within the bounds of each bespoke mandate, TPS portfolios are invested in line with the Coutts house view and style, and are structured around either Defensive, Balanced, or Growth risk profiles.
A typical portfolio will contain a diversified range of equities, bonds, and ‘diversifying strategies’. It will also utilise multiple routes to market such as via direct investments, carefully selected third-party funds or Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and other passive vehicles where appropriate. As with our unitised offerings, our strong positioning in the marketplace allows us to achieve market-competitive rates from external fund houses, the benefits of which can be passed on to our clients.
The Tailored Portfolio Service provides a flexible and investment solution, in-depth service via a dedicated Portfolio Manager, and - for clients with £10m to invest - the ability to create an entirely bespoke portfolio solution. The Tailored Portfolio Service is available for clients with a minimum of £1m, £2m, and £10m respectively for the Discretionary, Advisory, and Bespoke options respectively.

Tax reliefs referred to are those applying under current legislation, which may change. The availability and value of any tax reliefs will depend on your individual circumstances.
