Backing the next generation of innovative entrepreneurs takes more than just money. It takes courage and commitment to stick with a great idea and help foster it to fruition. At Coutts, we believe our unique entrepreneurial client base and extensive network means that we are able to bring together innovative and exciting small private businesses with investors ready to do more than just invest.
There’s a funding gap in the UK with relatively few sources of institutional capital for smaller private companies. Our Investment Opportunity Service can help to plug that gap. It’s an exclusive club for financially sophisticated high-net-worth clients looking for direct investment opportunities in compelling small private businesses that are ready to take the next step and grow.
Using our resources to find exciting small businesses
The reputation of our client base means we’re approached by companies everyday looking for high net worth investors. Our Coutts Commercial banking relationships combined with those of our corporate parent, NatWest, a leading provider of banking services for small business in the UK, connect us with companies with ambitions to grow. In addition, our clients also bring ideas to the business– as entrepreneurs and business angels themselves they have an ear to the ground for interesting opportunities.
We see hundreds of fast-growing companies every year and seek to cherry-pick the best businesses with the highest calibre management teams. Most of the companies we work with are small businesses looking for growth capital. This means that typical investment levels are from £2m to £10m, and investors can expect to be in for the long term.
This type of direct investment is suitable for more financially sophisticated investors, with sufficient resources to see their money tied up for some time. It also carries a higher level of risk than investing in traditional listed equities, which investors need to be comfortable with. And this is an introductory service only – we don’t manage the investment for you, and you should have the experience and ability to carry out your own due diligence.
Investing your time as well as your money
Many of our clients are already successful entrepreneurs, which we think puts them in a good position to not just provide capital but also support businesses with insights and advice. Many clients take on non-executive director roles or advisory board positions to provide guidance as the businesses grows.
For the right customer, the rewards can be exciting. As well as an investment opportunity, this is a chance to get in involved with an exciting new business and experience the less material reward of helping a business grow and find its place in the world.
If you’d like to find out more about investing through our investment opportunities service, then please contact your private banker to arrange an introduction to the Strategic Solutions team. The value of investments, and the income from them, can go down as well as up, and you may not recover the amount of your original investment. Where an investment involves exposure to a foreign currency, changes in rates of exchange may cause the value of the investment, and the income from it, to go up or down. Investments in emerging markets are subject to certain special risks, which include, for example, a certain degree of political instability, relatively unpredictable financial market trends and economic growth patterns, a financial market that is still in the development stage and a weak economy.
