Coutts Food
The Ivy
1-5 West Street, London, WC2H 9NQ. Tel: 020 7836 4751
That the Ivy is London’s most legendary restaurant is hard to dispute. Though it was but a modest cafe when it opened in 1917, it quickly became a hub of the theatre scene, both for audience members dining prior to curtain and theatre professionals who gathered afterwards to raise a glass to a great performance (or to commiserate over a less-than great one).
It strikes guests as being a relaxed restaurant. The food here is based around classic, recognisable nursery dishes, such as sausages and mash, and shepherd's pie, with desserts like the super-sweet rice pudding.
The windows let in a gentle flow of natural light, and stained glass gives the place a cloistered, private feel. Modernist paintings on the walls prevent the atmosphere from becoming too church-like, and the same themes are repeated upstairs in the 60-seat private dining room, complete with baby grand piano and crescent bar.
What brings most diners to The Ivy isn't necessarily the food, but the fame it's developed. Members like the experience of dining in London's most famous restaurant and spotting the celebrities as they barge past the paparazzi. On any day of the week diners spot someone from the celebrity galaxy - be they A-list or Z-list. The Ivy is a packed and lively place.
Waterside Inn
Ferry Road, Bray, Berkshire, SL6 2AT. Tel: 01628 620691
Founded by Michel Roux, The Waterside Inn has earned and kept its three Michelin stars for more than 20 years thanks to a diligent approach to serving excellent food.
The classic French menu, featuring pan-fried escalope of foie gras, and fillet of sole with a champagne sauce, is well maintained by Michel's son, Alain, who has succeeded his father as chef patron.
Nestled at the end of a rural lane by the River Thames in the village of Bray, Berkshire, the location and the food keep members coming back. The whitewashed and well-beamed building resembles a pretty riverbank villa, while inside the lounge is a cosy spot for winter days and the dining room gives views over the river. The décor is warm and unimposing, as you'd expect from a place that focuses more on food than fancy contemporary styling.
An overnight stay is the best way to experience the tranquil atmosphere of The Waterside Inn. Ten can book members into one of its individually-styled rooms and suites. Those away for a romantic break will love Mallards, a private two-storey apartment with its own riverside terrace.
INSIDER TIPS
- Ask Ten about the Roux cookery school programme, a two-day residential course priced at £2,200.
- Leave plenty of time to find the restaurant, since it can be difficult to locate. Or ask Ten to book you a taxi.
- There is a private dining room available, but be aware that it has no river views
