Coutts London Jewellery Week
The Week that Sparkled
New talent was the focus of this year's Coutts London Jewellery Week (CLJW), with up-and-coming designers showcasing their wares at most of the week's major shows and exhibitions.
Hundreds of jewellers were involved over the course of the event, which ran from 8-14 June and which was sponsored for the second year running by Coutts. And while the big names in the industry such as Stephen Webster, Sean Leane and Theo Fennell, were all heavily involved in proceedings, the main aim of this year’s event was to support the jewellery industry at all levels, including the grass roots.
Coutts hosted clients and jewellers at its event on 9 June at 440 Strand and Nick Pollard, managing director, took to the stage to emphasise the need to support the industry in a challenging marketplace. "Times are tough in every industry," he reflected, "but this makes it all the more important that we continue to commit to supporting entrepreneurs as well as the world of contemporary art and design at a time when they are most in need." Guests at the event had the opportunity to view and buy jewellery from established designers as well as several recipients of the Coutts New Jewellers Awards. The 20 award-winners, each with a business less than four years old, were given complimentary participation in CLJW. They also attended a two-day Business Development Forum at Coutts, where keynote speakers offered them tips on how to sustain, grow and market their businesses.
Guests on the night were also treated to a performance from all-girl string quartet and former Britain's Got Talent semi-finalists, Escala. Other highlights of the events programme included Rising Gems , a one-off exhibition at the Liberty department store which was sponsored by Swarovski. The up-and-coming designers, collaborated for this project by creating new pieces of jewellery inspired by UK conservation charity, the World Land Trust whose patron is Sir David Attenborough.
Treasure , at The Flower Cellars in Covent Garden, saw established and emerging designers gather together to exhibit their work, with the emphasis on cutting-edge and contemporary design. And several of the capital's leading independent jewellers, including David Marshall and Ben Day, displayed their work at an intimate fashion show in the Goldsmiths' Hall.
Head of sponsorship & events, Jill Chimes, was pleased with the change in direction in 2009. "While last year’s event may have been more about the glitz and glamour of the industry, I think CLJW has benefited from the change in the economic climate. It re-focused everyone’s minds in terms of nurturing and protecting the industry for future generations and I’m delighted Coutts was able to play its part in supporting this."
