The Faber Academy
Coutts was delighted to sponsor The Faber Academy, a newly formed writing and live events programme launched in October 2008 by the publisher Faber and Faber. Faber and Faber publish the works of many well known writers including William Golding, Robert Lowell, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, W. S. Graham, Philip Larkin, P. D. James, Tom Stoppard, John Osborne, Harold Pinter, Alan Bennett, Ricky Gervais and many more.
The Faber Academy rolled out the first of its creative writing courses in October 2008 in Paris and London with plans for courses in a number of major metropolitan cities around the world, including Dublin, Edinburgh, Rome, Barcelona and Berlin, as well as further events in Paris and London.
The first creative writing coursel took place in Paris at legendary Left-Bank bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, and focused on the idea of respect for the reader. Tobias Hill was lead tutor for the four days, and Jeanette Winterson delivered a seminar on the importance of authenticity and voice in fiction. Tickets for this event sold out within days of going on sale.
The first course in the UK took place from 30 October-2 November in London's Fitzroy Square, a square with many literary associations. Tobias Hill and Sarah Hall examined the role of poetic licence, the rewards of research, and the contrasting roles of naturalism and the unnatural in fiction. Also included in the course was a guest appearance from Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, who talked about his own experiences of creative writing followed by a Q & A.
