Royal Opera House
Coutts has a long association with the Royal Opera House and over recent years has sponsored the Royal Opera’s new productions of Pagliacci (2003), Faust (2004), the revival of Otello (2005) and new production of Tosca (2006). In 2007 Coutts was joint sponsor with the jeweller, Van Cleef & Arpels, of The Royal Ballet’s new production of Jewels.
This year Coutts is delighted to sponsor the Royal Opera’s new production of Don Carlo. This production by Verdi is conducted by Antonio Pappano with Marina Poplavskaya and Rolando Villazon taking the lead roles. Don Carlo is 'one of the most perfect Verdi operas', an epic, intense, rich, based on Schiller's brilliant and very well-known play. It is a 'super-production', with large scale scenes, processions and huge chorus.
The opera is historically associated with Covent Garden. The opening of Luchino Visconti's production of Don Carlo at Covent Garden in 1958 was one of the landmark events in the post-war history of the Royal Opera House. It was the first time that the five-act version of the epic had been staged in Britain. In 1994 they had a production by Luc Bondy in the French version with Karita Mattila.
Coutts earliest connection with Covent Garden dates back to 1733. In the early nineteenth century, Thomas Coutts, a partner in the Bank, became a shareholder of the theatre and received two silver tokens permitting him to sit in any seat in the house, which we still have today.
