Propeller, one of the most celebrated and innovative Shakespeare theatre companies, was formed in the mid 1990's after a successful run of Othello at The Watermill Theatre. The creation of the ensemble was driven by Edward Hall, whose passion for Shakespeare was simple: to direct plays with great clarity, speed and full of as much imagination in the staging as possible. Since then, Edward Hall's work with the Propeller actors has continually explored the relationship between text and performance, to find new and more engaging ways of expressing Shakespeare. Influences have included mask work, animation, classic and modern film and music from all ages. The ensemble's approach to the work results in passionate, exciting and memorable productions and a devoted following, of all ages for the company's productions.
Propeller won international acclaim with its 2007 tour of The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night, winning an OBIE Award for its New York run of The Taming of the Shrew . The OBIE Awards honour off-Broadway shows.
The Watermill Theatre, home of Propeller, produces quality work that attracts high calibre artists and creative teams, earning it a reputation as one of the very best producing regional theatres in the country.
It is one of only five theatres that has been awarded a National Touring remit by Arts Council England. An intimate theatre, it seats 220 people within a stunning converted mill situated in beautiful gardens on the bank of the river Lambourn, just outside Newbury in West Berkshire.
