Coutts & Co appoints senior family business advisor

Coutts & Co has announced the appointment of Juliette Johnson as Senior Family Business Adviser. In her role, Juliette will provide high level consulting to families working together on a range of issues from governance, succession, communication, family constitutions and some of the softer people dilemmas, with a particular focus on developing and preparing the next generation for responsible ownership and management.

Coutts has a dedicated family business team that is able to connect family business owners with the country’s leading professional advisers on issues such as family ownership, business succession, conflict management, raising liquidity and philanthropy.

Juliette, a chartered accountant with a degree in Business Studies, began her career at BDO Stoy Hayward LLP in 1998 and became Director of the BDO Centre for Family Business. With significant experience in this role, Juliette gained valuable skills from working with a diverse range of clients, including many of the largest family and privately owned businesses in the UK, India, the Middle East and Europe.

Mark Evans, head of Family Business and Philanthropy at Coutts commented: “At Coutts, we provide a personal and high quality financial service to family business owners and their families as well as commercial banking for their companies. We also have alliances with many UK leading advisers on specialist issues related to family businesses and this year will be hosting more than 20 events and forums on this very important sector of the economy.”

“We’re delighted that Juliette has agreed to join our team, helping to strengthen the existing experience with her strong links with the family business community and her experience in advising multi-generational family businesses. I am confident that she will be a great asset to us and will assist Coutts in its continued success of providing expert advice and solutions to an increasing number of family businesses.”

Juliette added: “I’m really looking forward to working with the Coutts team focussing on family business and the next generation of business owners. The challenge is to help our clients balance the best interests of the business with the best interests of the family and to help them to find creative ways to solve tomorrow’s predictable problems today.”

“My experience of Coutts is that it has an unrivalled reputation for providing clients with expert solutions and the rise in demand for the services that the family business team at Coutts provides is a great testament to the ongoing success of its work.”

Coutts Prize for Family Business is the only regional programme in England and Wales celebrating the overall best performing small, medium-sized and large family businesses in the UK.  The awards, which are now in their third year, recognises firms in three categories (£1m-5m, £5m-£25m, £25m+).

The Coutts Prize, endorsed by organisations such as the British Chambers of Commerce, Cranfield University, The Financial Mail on Sunday, Ipsos MORI, and the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners recognises family firms that demonstrate a combination of high standards of family governance and corporate governance, a competitive market position and consistent financial growth, and a track record of charitable giving or involvement in the local community. Entrants must be companies or firms where two or more family members together have control of over 25% of the voting shares and consider themselves as a family business.
