Coutts & Co hosts Family Business forum and dinner in Leicestershire

The Secrets of Long-term Success

On 22 June, Coutts will host an evening at Stapleford Park near Melton Mowbray for family businesses from across Leicestershire, examining in practical terms the challenges that currently face family firms.

The event is the latest in a series to take place throughout the country, giving family business owners the opportunity to engage in interactive debates, discussions and panel sessions that aim to offer practical advice and real life examples to share with family members and colleagues.

The forum will be hosted by Jo Thornell, Coutts’ Managing Partner for the Midlands and will include the following speakers:

  • Michael and George Wright of M Wright & Sons Ltd, one of the UK’s leading specialist manufacturers of woven narrow fabrics. Michael and George will talk about the journey the family have been on and how they have managed to achieve their long-term success over six generations of family ownership. They will also explain the steps they have taken to prepare the family for the future, including aligning the vision of the family, holding regular family meetings and the creation of a Family Charter and Family Council.
  • Juliette Johnson, Head of UK Family Business, Coutts & Co. Juliette will talk on the subject of ‘Solving tomorrow’s predictable problems today.’ Using a number of simple tools and techniques, the interactive and practical session will demonstrate how to identify the future risks and challenges that can arise within family businesses.

Juliette Johnson said: "Having family members working together in a family business can create a powerful and cohesive management team, yet there can be challenges that arise from differences in individual style of working or vision. The key to success is ensuring families can work together by managing those differences and developing open communication and clarity in everything they do.

"Working closely with clients over the years has shown us that family businesses benefit from hearing the concerns and thoughts of others that have been in similar positions themselves. It helps families to identify future challenges and provides comfort and support, making them realise that their own situation is neither unique nor impossible. As a company that started off as a family business, we look forward sharing our experiences."
