In recognising that reputation is a key issue facing entrepreneurs and corporate directors today, Coutts has published Face Value: Your Reputation as a Business Asset. The report examines the role of today’s business leaders and the value of their own personal reputations in the making of the companies they run.
Working with some of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, we have seen a growing public interest in high-growth businesses and the personalities that lead them. As such, reputation and the nurturing and protection of it, is now not only the preserve of big corporates but also of individuals.
Given that the media often seek stories about people, rather than organisations, many companies have sought to boost the personal profile of the business leader as a means of promoting the company as a whole. This is a valid and valuable strategy, but it also carries risks.
This report delivers insight into the business leader as the chief representative for a company on the public stage. It interrogates the idea that business leaders have a ‘face value’ and argues that this personal reputation is the canvass upon which much future business success will depend.
It brings together a personal viewpoint of the author, Michael Hayman, based on his own experience in business, politics and the communications industry, the sentiments of a series of interviews with business leaders, research from YouGov, and the views of a number of expert witnesses who have developed a unique perspective on the issue.
