Portfolio Manager – Bespoke Portfolio Management Team

I work as a portfolio manager in Wealth Investment Management We manage portfolios for high net worth clients, who have £10m or more available for investment. My role is varied but essentially focused on two key areas:

  • investment management – maximising returns for a given level of risk
  • relationship management – focusing on client service and building strong working relationships with both internal and external clients.

We can offer our clients both an advisory service, which involves us working directly with the client in the management of their assets, and a discretionary service, in which the client gives us sole responsibility to manage their investment portfolio.

What is a typical day like in your office?

Given the nature of investments no single day is the same. That said, I have an ongoing obligation to keep abreast of developments in all investment markets, and as such typically a part of my day will be spent catching up on the news and developments from US, Asian and Japanese markets which will have happened over night. In addition, it involves:

  • monitoring European markets and newsflow during the course of the day. This is looked at in the light of client portfolios, which are monitored and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that the current structure remains appropriate.
  • implement appropriate trades to realign the portfolio accordingly, as and when changes to underlying assets or asset allocation is required
  • talking to advisory clients on a regular basis about investment markets and discussing portfolio recommendations, as well as preparing for and attending portfolio review meetings with clients.

What do you like most about working for Coutts?

Aside from its history and pedigree, which speaks for itself, Coutts is also a dynamic organisation. It is one that constantly seeks to improve and develop new products and services. This desire to stay at the forefront of the private client wealth management industry presents me with plenty of opportunities to take on new challenges and further my career.

There is also a healthy emphasis on self-development. I am actively encouraged to look at ways to improve my skill set and am given opportunities to attend courses both internally and externally to help me with this. This is particularly appropriate with regard to my ambition to work in investment management – Coutts has given me that opportunity, supporting and sponsoring me through professional qualifications which I have undertaken during my time here, paying for my tuition fees, enabling me to take study days, paying for my exams and also my annual subscriptions to professional bodies after obtaining my qualifications.

I derive great job satisfaction from my role and have a good work-life balance working with Coutts.
