The Forum for Entrepreneurs revealed nine key foundation stones that a mentee should keep in mind when forging a successful mentoring relationship that can withstand the associated stresses of business life:
Gestalt
There is no advice given by the mentor, just a sharing of experiences and lots of insightful questions, allowing the mentee to draw their own conclusions.
Opt out
Include a three month window where either side can opt-out of the relationship.
Dynamism
The mentee must lead the relationship, be proactive and book the meetings.
Location
Choose a location that suits the mentor and always pay the bill.
Organisation
Always have an agenda and distribute prior to each meeting.
Follow up
Do what you say you are going to do and follow through.
Thank you
Have a way of saying thank you, such as a dinner or a night out at the theatre.
Honesty
Both sides must not be afraid of what they think.
Patience
It doesn’t happen overnight as it is a building process.
