Charities Aid Foundation and Community Foundations and New Philanthropy Capital

Once we have established a clear understanding of your needs and wishes, we will be in a position to guide you in making your decision about which way to turn for a better way to give. In addition to being able to offer specialist help and advice from Coutts, we have chosen to work with the Charities Aid Foundation and selected Community Foundations because we believe they are well equipped to help our clients increase the impact of their giving while taking care of all the associated administration from researching relevant charities to reclaiming tax on donations.

Neither Coutts, CAF or a CF receives any fee, commission or other reward as a direct result of an introduction being made to CAF and/or a CF. However CAF and CFs may choose to invest trust funds or bank other funds (to which, if you have been introduced to CAF or a CF, you may have contributed) with Coutts, for which we will receive our standard investment management or banking fees and charges, details of which are available on request. CAF and CFs may also charge fees and expenses in accordance with their respective administration arrangements.

You should also bear in mind that any gift you make to charity is irrevocable.

If you require advice on your personal tax circumstances please contact your tax adviser who can explain the tax benefits of charitable giving and how these affect you.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF): flexible giving, at home or abroad
The Charities Aid Foundation is a leading independent charity, which has championed effective giving for over 30 years. They help donors make the most of their giving, and charities make the most of their resources. Over 400, 000 individuals already use CAF’s donor services, in order to maximise the impact of their giving.

With CAF's expert help, setting up a Charitable Trust is straightforward. And whether you endow your trust with a single payment or build it up over a period, you are free to support whatever causes are most important to you – both in the UK and overseas. Meanwhile, the management and administration of your trust will be handled by experienced CAF professionals, who can offer advice on the most effective ways to support your favourite causes.

Community Foundations (CF): increase your local impact
Community Foundations are independent charities that will focus on connecting you with people and projects working to make your community a better place to live.

Setting up a Personal Fund with a Community Foundation opens up exciting new opportunities for you to make a real difference with your giving. It's simple, efficient, hassle-free and allows you complete freedom to achieve your charitable objectives, while leaving the Community Foundation to take care of all the administration.

The Community Foundation targets grants that make a genuine difference to the lives of local people, helping you achieve far more than you ever could by yourself. If you want to increase the impact of your giving locally, this may well be the best option for you.

New Philanthropy Capital (NPC): A combination of published research and tailored advice

Whatever your reasons for choosing to support charities, you want to make sure that your money makes a real difference. With more than 180,000 charities in the UKalone, this can be quite a challenge. New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) helps donors make better informed decisions through providing independent research and tailored advice.

NPC’s research helps donors understand how they can best support different causes such as cancer, education and disadvantaged communities. As well as explaining the areas of greatest need and funding gaps, it highlights examples of charities that could use support to best effect.

NPC’s tailored advice for individual clients helps place money and support where it will have greatest impact. In doing so, NPC helps answer questions like:

  • Where is my support most needed?
  • What could my money help achieve if it is used well?
  • Which organisation(s) could best use my money?
  • What is the best way to support these organisations?

NPC is a charity itself and does not restrict access to its research or make a profit from its advisory services. NPC charges a fee to cover its costs, typically between 2% and 5% of the donation. NPC’s aim is to ensure that your money gets to where it can best help those in need.
