Coutts Prize for Family Business 2007/8 – Regional Winner

Jesse Brough Metals International Ltd
Winner Best Family Business
Turnover Category £5 - 25m Northern England Region

Jesse Brough Metals International, based in Hixon, Stafford has been named ‘Best UK Family Business, Northern Region’, in the £5-25m turnover category of the Coutts Prize for Family Business 2007/8. The company will now go on to compete in the £5-25M category at the national finals to be held in central London on Thursday 5 June 2008. Jesse Brough Metals International were nominated for the award by Richard Behan of Hurst Accountants.

Staffordshire based, Jesse Brough Metals International was founded in 1979. JBMI are aluminium refining manufacturers and recyclers of aluminium waste. They have established a strong position in the UK market and are engaging on a worldwide expansion, rolling out new technologies to smelters in Australia, Thailand and Iceland.

Lucy Armstrong, Regional Chairman of the evaluation committee commented:

“Jesse Brough Metals International Ltd is a successful second generation family business that manufactures and recycles aluminium waste. The judges were particularly impressed with:

  • the family’s proactive approach to professionalising the business. A strong  and empowered non-family management team has grown the business and helped bridge the gap between the current and next generation of family members;
  • the resilience and determination of the family to work through difficult trading periods and some sensitive family circumstances;
  • the creation of a shareholder agreement and a structured process for buying back shares in the company has helped provide clarity about the relationship between the family and company; and
  • this is a business that has focused on addressing environmental initiatives early and embedded charitable giving into the culture of the organisation.
