Gordon was formerly group director of Lloyds TSB UK Retail Banking. He joined National Westminster Bank Plc as a director in February 2000, going on to become Chief Executive, Retail Banking.

He is also a director of Race for Opportunity, and a member of the FSA Practitioner Panel. He was appointed chairman of the Business Commission on Racial Equality in the Workplace in July 2006, and deputy Chairman of the Board of British Bankers Association in September 2007.
